Visit from the Atlanta Amen Clinic for Red Ribbon Week

Students in PreK-4th grade spent Wednesday morning of Red Ribbon Week with a therapist from the Amen clinic. Mr. Tom Bowen and therapist Julie from Atlanta Amen Clinics spent all morning reading and discussing healthy lifestyles with our students. Each group began with a discussion about our brain, what our brain does, and how we should be taking care of our brain. Your students gave suggestions about what our brain does for us, and ways that we can make good decisions to help our brain stay healthy.

The Amen Clinic therapist, Julie, read a story titled "What I Learned from a Penguin". Your students enjoyed listening to the story and making connections to their lives. This story is a fun rhyming story about how to help people change and think positive! This children's book is based on a true story as experienced by Dr. Amen himself. One day while watching a penguin named Fat Freddy take part in a stunt show at a local amusement park, he is astonished to see the penguin perform so well. Frustrated by his own son's behavior, Dr. Amen decides to find out how she got the penguin to follow all of her directions. Through clever rhyme and storytelling, the trainer shares with Dr. Amen the power of positive reinforcement. Your students enjoyed listening along to the story, and making connections to their lives.

At the end of this read aloud, the Amen Clinic therapist discussed with our FSA students how this story can help us think about our daily behavior. Our FSA students gave some great suggestions about how important it is to help others feel happy instead of sad, to encourage others daily, to respect others, and to treat others how we would like to be treated! The students were able to take away a great message inspired by the story they heard. Instead of our FSA students having a collection of Penguins like the boy in the story, our students can create a positive collection of their own to take with them every day. The students were able to start this positive collection with some great words of encouragement that they were able to carry with them as they left our assembly. Each student left feeling happy with a note in their pocket containing a great message...

"You are a great friend"

"You have great talent"

"Everyone is gifted"

"There is beauty even in failure"

"You are worth it"
"You matter to those around you"

It was a great way to continue our discussion about healthy lifestyle choices for Red Ribbon Week with our PreK-4th grade students. A big thank you to the Atlanta Amen Clinic for providing our students with some great experiences and a fun story to read :)
