COLLEGE MENTORSHIP PROGRAM NEWS FROM MRS. HARBIN'S CLASS

CMP has worked on a variety of life skills. First, students built effective communication skills through a debate on whether high schools should play football despite fatal injuries. While debating, students worked on verbal and nonverbal communication, where they spoke clearly and showed others that they were listening through body language.

After working on communication skills, CMP started the historical novel Johnny Tremain, where a boy must overcome an injury during the Revolutionary War. They are continuing to read the novel as well as have discussions inspired by the novel. They delve into many questions: Why do humans cry? Is crying good, bad, or neutral? How does Johnny deal with his stress, and how do you deal with your stress? Through this line of questioning, CMP is discovering how to empathize and how Johnny's experiences can apply to their lives.
