Advanced Band Club

Students have been hard at work in Advanced Band so far this year! This ensemble continues to grow with some fabulous musicians in grades 5th - 8th. We have enjoyed making music in a variety of musical styles, including marches, holiday music, rock, jazz and the classics. We're looking forward to showing off our hard work very soon! Stay Tuned!!

ADVANCED ORCHESTRA CLUB

The Advanced Orchestra Club is the pinnacle of orchestral performance here at FSA. Students of all ages come together on Tuesdays and Fridays to rehearse in large an ensemble. Why two sessions? – because we love making music and can’t get enough of it!

Our young musicians have been working hard on music from Handel’s Harmonious Blacksmith, Holst’s Jupiter, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol, and Pachabel’s Canon in D. We have sight-read works of varying styles, played duets & trios, and given impromptu performances for passersby throughout the semester.

The Advanced Orchestra Club is full of dedicated, enthusiastic, and talented string students. You will be seeing more of us in the future!

Fulton Science Academy Players to Perform Black Boots Lost Loot

MUSTANG PLAYERS TO PERFORM BLACK BOOTS LOST LOOT

This one-act comedy chronicles the rivalry between two pirate crews, Black Boot and his men and Scurvy Sal’s crew of lady pirates. Be prepared for a whirlwind of treasure hunts, mistaken identities, and pirate romance. Shiver me timbers!

Through this work, students have the chance to memorize lines, learn about stage presence and voice control, and even lend a hand with set design and costuming. It is certainly hard work, but in the end, the cast members are left with memories that last a lifetime.

December 8 and 9 on the FSA Stage

Ticket information is coming soon.

HIGH SCHOOL MODEL UN AT GA STATE UNIVERSITY

This week, the FSAPS High School Model UN team attended their first ever competition. On November 13 and 14 the team attended the 2016 edition of GSUMUN on the campus at Georgia State University. Though the team was small, with only 4 students attending the event that included hundreds of students from 41 area high schools, they made a memorable showing.

Representing Kenya, FSAPS students were involved in 3 different councils: the General Assembly (GA), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The goal of this year’s conference was to work towards meeting the UN Initiative for Sustainable Development Goals.

Chloe Richardson, an FSAPS sophomore, was named outstanding delegate in her committee, the FAO! In this council, they tackled 3 main topics related to the Sustainable Development Goals: Achieving Zero Hunger through Sustainable Agricultural Production; Eradicating Extreme Poverty and Hunger: Addressing Global Food Security; and Encouraging Climate-Smart Agriculture for Sustainable Development.

We are very proud of the entire Model UN team for the hard work they have put in to prepare for this event and look forward to travelling to Georgia Southern University and other competitions next semester.

FULTON SCIENCE ACADEMY HOSTS INAUGURAL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT

On Saturday, November 12, FSA hosted 24 teams from twelve schools in our Inaugural Science Olympiad Invitational.
“For a first tournament and this early in the season, it was very competitive. We had many of the top teams in the southeast, including Auburn Middle School from Alabama and Bearden Middle School and Friendship Christian Academy from Tennessee, not to mention our perennial rival Dodgen Middle School from Marietta,” said tournament director and FSA head coach, Pam Walsh.
“This was not a team competition,” explained Walsh. “It was an opportunity for students and coaches to measure their progress against each other. Normally Science Olympiad has very strict rules about team make-up, but we did not apply those rules in this tournament in order to give teams more flexibility.”
FSA students did remarkably well, placing in fourteen of the twenty events. Ribbons were awarded to the following FSA students:
Bottle Rockets – coached by Mr. Parlak-4th place – Karitheya and Ved, 5th place –Jay and Nicholas

Fulton Science Academy Elementary Service Learning

ELEMENTARY SERVICE LEARNING REACHES OUT!

Students in the Elementary Service Learning Club have been busy planning and promoting the "Blessings In A Backpack" Fundraiser.

In the recent weeks, students have learned about and discussed how food insecurity can play a big role in the ability to concentrate and perform in school. To support other students who may not have enough food to eat, service learning wrote letters to include in the "Blessings in a Backpack" food bags.

These letters included words of encouragement and support, and letting the student know that they always had a friend at FSA.

Saba F and Akshu T are two students who added some additional touches to her letter! Keep donating to our "Blessings in a Backpack" fundraiser so we can help feed as many kids as possible. Thank you for your support!

After the qualifier matches, the team advanced to the final four and played in the semi-final matches.
It was a great experience for the team and team members have already started to prepare for the second qualifier tournament in late January.
The team would like to thank supporters, Verizon and Solid Works. FSA would like to wish Syntax Error good luck during the second round FTC qualifier tournament later this winter.

Fulton Science Academy Math Geniuses Club

DR. ERKAN'S AND MRS. KURT'S MATH GENIUSES CLUB

Our little math geniuses in first grade were learning how to help cute little monsters in math riddles. They solved the math riddles that they were given by counting, adding and subtracting, grouping, eliminating, and of course critical thinking. Such activities greatly help our students develop analytical thinking and problem solving skills. Creating a solution to a problem by working collaboratively with their peers is a wonderful way to practice math.

Another challenge we took in our club was the "Marshmallow Tower" challenge. Our math geniuses used their creativity and geometry knowledge to build the tallest marshmallow tower with toothpicks. They worked really hard and put together great towers. If you need help building one yourself, ask one of our wonderful 1st graders:)

Our geniuses are wishing everyone a Happy Halloween! Boo

FULTON SCIENCE ACADEMY DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS

FSA students had a lot of fun on Sunday October 30th, at the Atlanta Historic Center during the celebration of “Día de los Muertos.” They learned about and experienced a Day of the Dead festival, enjoyed traditional dances, crafts, and authentic Mexican food.

Let’s remember this celebration was proclaimed in 2003 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and brings a beautiful meaning to honoring our beloved departed ones.

Fulton Science Academy Fall Celebration

On Friday, October 28th all the Kindergarten students enjoyed a Fall Centers Party between our two Kindergarten rooms and the grassy area in the front of the school. Students decorated cookies (one to eat and one to keep!) and enjoyed a cup of “Spooky Brew” at the “Cookie Decorating Station.” Our little artists painted beautiful wooden frames at the “Frame Station”. After adding a little glitter glue, acrylic paint, a few 3-D stickers, and the commemorative picture of all their friends from our field trip to the Art Barn- this Fall keepsake brought smiles to everyone’s face when they got to take the frames home!

Students were finally able to put the last two weeks of daily morning estimation practice to good use during the “Estimation Station” activity. Parent Volunteers helped students look at several containers filled with treats and prizes and had each member of the group come up with and write an estimate for the amount of items inside one jar they chose as a group. After counting every item in each jar, the child that guessed the closest to the actual number received two items from the jar to put in their goody bag. The other children in the group each received one. Students had tons of fun estimating like crazy and earning prizes until it was time to switch stations!

In the “Storytelling Cave” students helped select and then listened to some of their favorite Fall stories inside a cozy tent complete with fluffy pillows and a cozy pumpkin blanket. During the “Ugly Pumpkin” writing and craft center, parent volunteers teamed up to help students complete a graphic organizer with kind adjectives to describe the poor ugly pumpkin and then make an ugly pumpkin craft. Check out the masterpieces resulting from this activity by the Kindergarten classrooms!

In front of the school, students added points earned during “Pumpkin Buckets” and used pumpkin sponges to transport water as fast as they could from a giant cauldron to plastic pumpkin buckets in the “Jack-O-Lantern Relay.”

Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a big success. The students couldn’t stop talking about all the fun they had on Friday all day today. They said it was the “best day all year.” Oh, if only they knew how many fun events they have to look forward to yet in Kindergarten…

Fulton Science Academy 4th Grade Owl Pellets

OWL PELLETS – 4TH GRADE SCIENCE

This week, fourth graders had a chance to discover what’s inside the pellet that barn owls leave behind and why they do it! After a brief presentation, students opened their owl pellets and got started. They spent the next 30 minutes dissecting the pellet and sorting the bones as they went along. Students were excited to discover what their owl had eaten. The content of each pellet is unpredictable. Students had rodent or mole skulls in almost all the pellets. When the dissection was over, students took their bones home in a plastic bag.

What, exactly, are owl pellets? The digestive fluids of owls are actually very weak and they cannot digest body parts like bones, teeth, feathers or fur. Owls, therefore, must regurgitate pellets or castings of the indigestible bits before eating their next large meal. Regurgitation of pellets is similar to how cats cough up hair balls.

Interesting to see science at work.

Fulton Science Academy Zoo Atlanta Field Trip

The fourth and fifth grade classes had a wildly good time during their Atlanta Zoo field trip on Friday, October 28. Students participated in Classification Quiz Game Show seminar, during which they learned all about different types of animals and how they are classified. The students split up and competed against one another in groups, with the final result being a tie! During this time, they also met two special guests up close and personal: a skink that carries eggs during development and then gives birth to live young and a tortoise that the students all got to touch.

After the quiz show, students had a picnic-style lunch and took a train ride around the zoo's CandyLand setup. Finally, students separated into small groups and toured the zoo to visit all of the different animals. Thank you to all of the chaperones who helped make it a fun, educational, and successful field trip!

FULTON SCIENCE ACADEMY HILLCREST ORCHARDS FIELD TRIP

Students in grades 1-3 enjoyed a beautiful day at the apple orchards in Ellijay, Georgia, on Wednesday, October 26. Students took a long (but very exciting) bus ride to North Georgia to visit Hillcrest Orchards! Participants were very lucky to have some wonderful fall weather to enjoy the outdoors for the day.
On the trip, students were able to see what farm life is all about. Classes rotated through the different stations and experienced a variety of activities. Each student enjoyed a yummy cup of fresh apple cider, learned about how to feed cows, practiced taking kernels off ears of corn for the cows to eat, practiced and ACTUALLY milked a real cow named "Buttercup," learned about cows and bulls, visited an apple museum, and learned about how apples should be picked the correct way.
Soon after, students enjoyed a wagon ride through a nature trail, came face to face with farm animals in a petting zoo, ate a picnic lunch, zoomed down an extra fun slide, and last (but certainly not least) enjoyed some fun and FAST pig races to end our adventure!

NOVEMBER'S CHARACTER EDUCATION THEME IS "RESPECT"

NOVEMBER'S CHARACTER EDUCATION THEME IS "RESPECT"

Respect is:

1. Showing consideration for other people and their property.
2. Caring for ourselves, family, community, and school.
3. Appreciating and accepting individual differences.
4. Treating others the way that you would want to be treated.

How can we incorporate this theme throughout our school and our families this month?

We can encourage students to use kind words to one another, have good manners, and to be sensitive to other's feelings.

We can invite children to listen to what others have to say and to value someone's opinion, even if it's different than your own.

We can learn to appreciate differences among people and value someone's likes and dislikes.

We can help to care for other peoples' property, enjoy helping others and avoid negative behaviors such as mocking, teasing, or talking about someone behind their backs.

FALL FOOD DRIVE COMMENCES TO SUPPORT “BLESSINGS IN A BACKPACK”

Fulton Science Academy Service Learning Clubs announced a wonderful partnership with Blessings in a Backpack, a local nonprofit that aims to curb childhood hunger by providing food to at-risk children in our community.

Between now and the end of this semester, FSA students will be asked to donate individual, serving-sized, non-perishable items in their homerooms to help fight childhood hunger in our local community. Collections will continue from November 1 through December 6.

Partnering with “Blessings in a Backpack,” a local non-profit organization, FSAPS Service Learning Club members will collect items that will be sent home in personalized bags with school children in the north Atlanta metro area. Our representative will pick up donations weekly and deliver them to the schools served by the program. Our goal is to help supply nutritious food to children in need and help them to feel strong and ready to learn.

The statistics about childhood hunger are alarming! One in seven people in the metro-Atlanta area turns to food banks to help feed themselves and their families. Many families do not have the means to provide for their basic food needs. In fact, more than 164,000 children in the metro Atlanta area are afflicted by this reality.

FSAPS wants to help because #fsacares! We hope you will please help us make this campaign successful!

Grade level homerooms have been assigned specific products from the organization’s wish list of foods to help the children. Items include:

Pre K – K : Fruit Cups/Canned Chicken Soup (individual servings)

Grade 1: Canned Vegetables/Clementines/WOW Butter (Horizon product) (individual servings)

Grade 2: Mac and Cheese Cups/Canned Pastas – like Ravioli, Spaghetti and others (individual servings)

Grade 3: Pudding Cups/ Apple Sauce Cups/Grits and Mashed Potatoes (individual servings)

Grade 4: Granola Bars/Mixed Fruit Bars/Apples (individually packaged)

Please send in your donated items, as often as you wish, between now and December 6. Donation drop zones have been set up in the front lobby for lower grades and the cafeteria for upper grades. Service learning club members will be responsible for collecting and recording donations.

To engender a friendly spirit of competition between the grade levels, the winning grade will receive a reward at the conclusion of the campaign.

We thank each and every one of you in advance for your generous spirit. Thank you for helping us be a part of the solution to childhood hunger.
