The Fulton Science Academy Private School Science Olympiad Team traveled to its first out of state tournament of the season, competing in the Friendship Christian Invitational in Lebanon, Tennessee. The team left school on Friday morning and headed to the Adventure Science Center in Nashville where they participated in the “Energy Transformation” program exploring heat, light, and sound energy and a STEM Lab called CSI: Nashville in which they solved a crime using blood typing, fingerprinting, and fiber and hair analyses. Afterwards, students explored the museum including the Adventure Tower, Body Quest, and Space Chase exhibits.
The competition began early Saturday morning with 22 teams from Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia competing. Although there was tough competition, Fulton Science Academy students were called up for honors in 20 of the 23 events and the school was awarded the 2nd place team trophy behind Bearden Middle School from Tennessee. Even though the FSA B team placed 4th overall, tournament rules only allow one team trophy per school.
Head Coaches Pam Walsh and Gloria Stathos were pleased with the team’s performance. “Out of state tournaments are always a challenge,” said Mrs. Walsh. “This tournament was particularly stressful, coming less than a week after Winter break,” said Mrs. Stathos. She commended the students and coaches who used the time off to study their events and refine their devices.
