Fulton Science Academy Blank Family Foundation Visits FSA

On Thursday, March 23, Fulton Science Academy proudly hosted Ms. Ayana Gabriel, Program Officer from the Arthur Blank Family Foundation in charge of the foundation's portfolio of STEAM funding. The purpose of Ms. Gabriel's visit was to tour the school, learn more about our short and long term vision, and discuss possible collaborative projects between the two organizations.

Formed in 1995, The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation promotes innovative solutions to transform the lives of youth and their families, seeking results that move communities beyond what seems possible today. One strategic funding initiative is their emphasis on the expansion of STEAM education in the greater Atlanta area, including the Pipeline Project.

Over the past decade, the Foundation has invested nearly $10 million into efforts to improve the quality of life in the neighborhoods on the west side of Atlanta. To further its work in additional areas of need, the Foundation has created the Westside Neighborhood Prosperity Fund, a $15 million long-term commitment to invest in catalytic projects that will ignite positive change and transform both people and place in Atlanta’s Westside communities.

Mr. Blank, chairman of the Foundation, co-founded The Home Depot, the world’s largest home improvement retailer, in 1978 and retired from the company as co-chairman in 2001. Through the Foundation and his family’s personal giving, Mr. Blank has granted more than $300 million to various charitable organizations.

Fulton Science Academy Students Raise More Than $1,500 For ST. Baldrick's Foundation

We are happy to say that FSA raised $1,584 for the
St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Our student council members did a great job motivating their peers to raise money for such an important cause. The student council members shared information with their homerooms and encouraged everyone to purchase St. Baldrick’s shirts and to donate money to the cause, which aims to eradicate childhood cancer.

As promised, if the school raised $1,500 or more, Mr. Parlak agreed to shave his head. Please stay tuned for more details on this event!

You can learn more about this organization as well as continue to donate online. https://www.stbaldricks.org/ Thank you to everyone who made this event such a success!

Fulton Science Academy Players to Perform Black Boots Lost Loot

MUSTANG PLAYERS TO PERFORM BLACK BOOTS LOST LOOT

This one-act comedy chronicles the rivalry between two pirate crews, Black Boot and his men and Scurvy Sal’s crew of lady pirates. Be prepared for a whirlwind of treasure hunts, mistaken identities, and pirate romance. Shiver me timbers!

Through this work, students have the chance to memorize lines, learn about stage presence and voice control, and even lend a hand with set design and costuming. It is certainly hard work, but in the end, the cast members are left with memories that last a lifetime.

December 8 and 9 on the FSA Stage

Ticket information is coming soon.

Fulton Science Academy Fall Celebration

On Friday, October 28th all the Kindergarten students enjoyed a Fall Centers Party between our two Kindergarten rooms and the grassy area in the front of the school. Students decorated cookies (one to eat and one to keep!) and enjoyed a cup of “Spooky Brew” at the “Cookie Decorating Station.” Our little artists painted beautiful wooden frames at the “Frame Station”. After adding a little glitter glue, acrylic paint, a few 3-D stickers, and the commemorative picture of all their friends from our field trip to the Art Barn- this Fall keepsake brought smiles to everyone’s face when they got to take the frames home!

Students were finally able to put the last two weeks of daily morning estimation practice to good use during the “Estimation Station” activity. Parent Volunteers helped students look at several containers filled with treats and prizes and had each member of the group come up with and write an estimate for the amount of items inside one jar they chose as a group. After counting every item in each jar, the child that guessed the closest to the actual number received two items from the jar to put in their goody bag. The other children in the group each received one. Students had tons of fun estimating like crazy and earning prizes until it was time to switch stations!

In the “Storytelling Cave” students helped select and then listened to some of their favorite Fall stories inside a cozy tent complete with fluffy pillows and a cozy pumpkin blanket. During the “Ugly Pumpkin” writing and craft center, parent volunteers teamed up to help students complete a graphic organizer with kind adjectives to describe the poor ugly pumpkin and then make an ugly pumpkin craft. Check out the masterpieces resulting from this activity by the Kindergarten classrooms!

In front of the school, students added points earned during “Pumpkin Buckets” and used pumpkin sponges to transport water as fast as they could from a giant cauldron to plastic pumpkin buckets in the “Jack-O-Lantern Relay.”

Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a big success. The students couldn’t stop talking about all the fun they had on Friday all day today. They said it was the “best day all year.” Oh, if only they knew how many fun events they have to look forward to yet in Kindergarten…

FULTON SCIENCE ACADEMY SECOND GRADERS CELEBRATE JOHNNY APPLESEED DAY!

#fsacares
This past Monday, second grade students entered the building in their plaid shirts and skirts to get ready for a day filled with apples and Johnny Appleseed! Students left the school completely dressed as Johnny Appleseed... including a pot hat and everything!
It was a fun day filled with apple-themed learning. Students rotated to the three second grade teachers for a lesson and activity centered around Johnny Appleseed. When students visited Ms. P's classroom, they learned about the life cycle of the apple and put this life cycle into their own words. They created a 3-D version of an apple, showcasing the 4 main stages of an apple's life cycle.
In Ms. Minor's classroom, students dove into apple math centers. They found the weight of apples, measured apples, they found out how many apples tall they were! They had a blast using standard and non-standard measurement.
Students visited Mrs. Adam's class and heard a story about Johnny Appleseed to learn more about his history. Students discussed fact vs. legend, and sorted different ideas into fact or legend categories. After their reading comprehension activities, they created a hat to turn themselves into Johnny Appleseed!
At the end of the day, students finished their "Apple Investigations," including graphing the taste of their apples (their favorite part of the day!) It was a very exciting day to be in second grade at FSA!
