WHAT IS DUKE TIP?

As the largest program of its kind, participants in the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search identify academic strengths, develop abilities and interests, and celebrate their achievements at a crucial time when they are forming their identities and looking ahead to the future. TIP assists families in determining how advanced their students’ academic abilities are and what level of educational challenge is appropriate.

Seventh grade students with strong intellectual abilities are eligible to participate because they achieved a qualifying score at or above the 95th percentile on a recent grade-level test. They have been identified as part of a select group who would benefit from participation in the Duke Tip program for academically talented students.

Fulton Science Academy Private School State Social Studies Fair

STATE SOCIAL STUDIES FAIR

On Saturday, April 16, students from FSAPS attended the 2016 State Social Studies Fair at Clayton State University.

7th grader Isabella Sims took her project, “All The Pretty Horses: The Truth About America’s Wild Horses” and the 8th grade team of Ananya Pottabhathini and Prajwal Vedula entered their project “How Has the Syrian Refugee Crisis Impacted Europe’s Economy?”

These students had previously competed in the FSAPS school-wide Social Studies Fair in January and won first place in the West Metro Regional Social Studies Fair in March before earning the right to compete against students from across the state.

Both groups received ribbons and recognition for the hard work they put into their research and visual designs. The experience of doing original research and presenting it to a variety of judges will help prepare them for future research projects.

Congratulations to Isabella, Ananya, and Prajwal for their work and making it all the way to represent FSAPS in the state competition.

MEDIA FESTIVAL STUDENTS ADVANCED TO STATE LEVEL!

FULTON SCIENCE ACADEMY PRIVATE SCHOOL ROAD TO COLLEGE EVENT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!

FSA opened her doors for a "Road to College" event last Thursday evening. The event was well supported by a host of Georgia Colleges and our families. Although aimed primarily at the higher grades it was a bonus to see so many parents of our younger students also attending the event. The schedule was as follows:

6:00pm – Each college/university presented their schools for about 5 minutes.

7:00pm – College/university representatives was on a panel for the parents to ask questions

7:30pm – Time for parents to visit the tables of the college and universities

Fulton Science Academy Private School Atlanta Brain Assembly

ATLANTA BRAIN ASSEMBLY
2nd Grade participated in the annual Atlanta Brain Awareness Campaign on Thursday! The Atlanta Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience (ACSfN) sponsors free school visits from Atlanta neuroscientists. This is a outreach program in which a volunteer comes to teach students all about the wonders of the brain. This year our neuroscientist volunteer taught 2nd grade all about different characteristics of animal brains AND also how the eyes effect the brain's reaction. The students were involved in many different hands on experiments and open discussions. Finally, at the end of the presentation, our students got to put on a glove and touch a REAL brain! What a great learning experience!

Fulton Science Academy Model UN Trip to New York City

MORE FROM MODEL UN TRIP
Members of the FSAPS Model United Nations team began Spring Break early this year – spending 4 days in New York City from March 30 – April 2 competing in the 2016 Global Classrooms International Model United Nations Middle School Conference.
A dozen FSAPS students travelled to the Big Apple where they took in the sights before competing with over 1700 students from numerous countries.

This year FSAPS was representing the country of Iraq. Students had agreat time participating in the conference, where they were split into various councils to discuss important issues facing the world today. During this time, students made friends with their peers from schools in the US and around the world to present positions and resolutions to these issues. This conference was a terrific experience and the students were well-prepared and confident in their performance.

Students were delegates of Iraq in the following United Nations committees:
DISEC Disarmament and International Security Committee
FAO Food and Agriculture Organization
GA3 SOCHUM Third Committee of the General Assembly: Social, Humanitarian & Cultural
ILO International Labour Organization
UNESCO United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
WFP World Food Programme

Arriving in the city early, students were treated to fantastic weather as they took in the many sites and shopping opportunities. This included a boat tour around the city, visiting the 9/11 memorial and museum, walking through Central Park, visiting the American Museum of Natural History or the Metropolitan Museum of Art, riding the subway, and visiting Times Square during both the day and evening. Students also took the opportunity to shop for souvenirs at stores such as the World of Nintendo, the LEGO Store, and Dylan’s Candy Bar, a 3-story candy shop.

We are extremely proud of the hard work our students put into preparing for the conference and for their performance. These students were gracious, dignified, and represented FSAPS in the best possible light. Most of all each had a great experience and created memories that will last a lifetime.

KINDERGARTEN HANDS ON SCIENCE CLUB

Students in Hands on Science club have so much fun! Science is all around us. Benefits of learning science hands-on are incomparable to text book questions and assignments. Here are a few examples of what we have been doing; What chemical reaction occurs when we mix mentos to diet coke, What is a non-newtonian fluid, or can we make our own hovercraft?

Fulton Science Academy Private School 5th Grade Book Reports

5TH GRADE BOOK REPORTS!

The fourth and fifth graders all worked hard and did a fantastic job on their latest assignment--book report projects! The fourth graders, who read Redwall by Brian Jacques, were given a choice of project assignments. They could create a variety of things ranging from board games to 3-D models and scrapbooks. The fifth graders, who read The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan, created 3-D dodecahedron models. Each segment of the shape gives information about the book or something related. All of the projects are fantastic!

The projects are displayed in the hallway leading toward the gym. If you are on campus at any time, please stop by and take a look at our wonderful student work!

7TH GRADER HOLDEN WATSON QUALIFIED FOR USA JUNIOR MATH OLYMPIAD.

One of our young 7th graders, Holden Watson, qualified for 2016 USAJMO Contest – USA Junior Math Olympiad Contest. Holden is one of the two students in GA who qualified to participate in 2016 USAJMO contest based on his superior performance in AMC 10 and AIME I contests! Congratulations to Holden on his prestigious recent success!

Briefly, the USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO) is an exam used after the American Invitational Mathematics Examination to determine the top math students in America in grades 10 and under. It is possible for students to qualify for the Red level of the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program.

After two steps following USAJMO contest, top six students are selected to form USA Math Team to represent USA in the International Math Olympiad.

Fulton Science Academy SAT Camp was lots of Fun!

FSAPS Middle School students had a fun-filled long weekend at the second SAT Math & Vocabulary cabin camp of this year! We left at 6:00 PM on Friday, April 1st, 2016 and returned back around 12:00 PMon Monday, April 4th, 2016. We had many SAT Math sessions & SAT Verbal sessions in addition to a very competitive verbal competition we had on Saturday evening! One of our graduates, Ethan Gardner, also participated in our SAT camp. Students played games, had delicious food, watched a movie, enjoyed Lake Lanier scene, and jogged around the lake. Like the last camp, it was one of our students’ birthday; we had a surprise birthday party for Charles Bolocan. HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHARLES!!

We may have a third SAT camp before the end of the second semester! Stay tuned…

Fulton Science Academy Private School Cultural Cafe

The Cultural Cafe event this past Sunday afternoon was fantastic! Thanks to all of the volunteers that made it a success especially Kelly Dennis Utterback and Susie Miramontes. We got to eat food from dozens of different countries and were entertained by student performers. There were also a few student fundraisers for the academic teams getting ready to go to National Championship competitions next month! As usual, there is a lot going on at FSA!

ARTS & CRAFTS CLUB

Over the past several weeks, Mrs. James and the kindergarten Arts & Crafts Club were very busy finger knitting! Children have been learning how to make scarves, bracelets, necklaces and headbands using their fingers and yarn! Fun fact… The longest piece of finger knitting measured 4,321.4 m (14,177 ft 9 in) and was completed by Niklas Bernhard (Germany) on June 10, 2004. Niklas, who used woollen yarn left overs supplied by relatives and friends, learned to finger knit in kindergarten and then used this technique to improve his concentration. The finger knitted chain took more than eight years to be finished and was wound into a ball measuring 34 cm (13 in) and weighing 5.62 kg (12 lb 6 oz).

1ST GRADE DONUTS WITH DADS

On Friday, April 1st, FSA's first grade classes hosted Donuts with Dad. Students in Mrs. Whitlock and Ms. Selstad's class invited their dads to a morning of yummy breakfast, quality time, and some fun gifts. Students worked very hard and created donuts with a dozen adjectives to describe their dad, a story where their dad was a superhero, and a picture telling dads why they loved them! It was a very special time for all of us. We are so thankful for our dads!
