College Mentorship Program
MRS. KHAN'S FIFTH GRADE CMP
Mrs. Khan's fifth grade CMP class had a great time focusing on teamwork this week. The boys talked about teamwork and then put their discussions into practice by working together to create board games. The boys had to make a plan, agree on their game time, draw/create a game board, and write up the instructions for the game. They worked together as partners, agreeing, disagreeing, and compromising to come up with final products. Now we will save our games for future play! MS. PRUETT’S CMP CLASS
In Ms. Pruett’s CMP class, the 6th grade girls have been discussing various topics relating to life as a middle school student. We began by listing goals and brainstorming solutions for possible hurdles along the way, practiced reading non-verbal cues and showing empathy for others, and we created “Inspiration” posters to share what motivates us.
We have also been reading and discussing the book Stargirl. The young adult novel, tackles issues such as nonconformity and popularity and was a New York Times bestseller as well as a Parents Choice Gold Award Winner. Students have enjoyed discussing the themes common to the middle school experience.
Community Service Activities
Thank you to everyone that sent in canned food to help those in need. We were able to deliver a total of 1307 various types of food for the North Fulton Community Charity to use to help the families in our community.
The three grades that have the highest amount of donations are as follows:
2nd grade – donated 275 cans
7th grade – donated 227 cans
5th grade – donated 219 cans
These three grades earned a dress down day for their wonderful generosity.

SOUTHERN MUSEUM OF CIVIL WAR AND LOCOMOTIVE HISTORY
Our museum visit was a wonderful learning experience. We learned all about the importance of locomotives during the Civil War.
The students were separated into groups and then each group experienced all of the activities the museum had to offer along the way.
In addition to viewing and learning about the exhibits, the kids went on a scavenger hunt, watched a movie, looked at Civil War Era games, saw a movie about the Great Locomotive Chase, saw a Civil War soldier "gun shooting" demonstration, and shopped in the museum gift shop.
The famous steam locomotive, General was a sight to see. The students learned all about the heroic adventure that James Andrews and William Fuller experienced with the Great Locomotive Chase.
There was also a US Army soldier there, dressed to impress and share his military life and tell what it takes to shoot his rifle.
The weather couldn’t have been better. We were able to enjoy our lunch outside and run around a bit as well.
Thank you to all of the wonderful parents who came along to chaperone; we very much appreciate you all!

Fulton Science Academy Thanksgiving Dinner
What an excellent evening!
A huge Thank You to our PVO Board members, Amanda Crigler, Tamara Stevens, Shelley Kersey, Kelley Utterback, Suzie Miramontes, and Laura Kefalas and to the wonderful band of helpers! We couldn't have done it without you!
Many of us did not know each other just 4 short months ago, it's truly amazing how we have now become a very friendly, happy community.

Technology Fair Cabin Camp
The Tech Fair Team spent last weekend at a workshop at Lake Lanier. Students worked on their projects with their coaches and made very good progress. Moreover, they played games, had a camp fire, watched a movie and enjoyed delicious food which was prepared by our teachers and Mr.Uduk. It was a fantastic weekend both for teachers and students and it was a great opportunity to feel the team spirit.
MR. STIFFLER'S COLLEGE MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
In Mr. Stiffler’s CMP, his 8th grade students are working to build leadership skills, exploring future colleges and potential majors, as well as practicing for upcoming Model UN competitions. It is important that our small group try and foster a sense of teamwork so that each member can reach their full potential.
There are two main areas of focus that are currently being explored in this CMP class: leadership and college preparation. As eight graders, these students are looked up to and emulated by the rest of the student body so it is important to behave properly and lead by example. Understanding this and consciously doing so remain a work in progress, but there have been a few exercises designed to help facilitate this.
Recent discussions have focused on plans for college. Though it is still a long way off, and plans are certain to change, the students each have some understanding of what career they would like to pursue as well as universities they hope to attend. This includes researching college entry requirements, the best state and national schools for different majors, and what they can do, even at this early stage, to begin preparing to reach their goals. Our students are smart and creative problem solvers, however they understand there are many students that desire the same spots, so students need to distinguish themselves.
The class is currently reading “My Brother Sam Is Dead” by Christopher Collier and James Lincoln Collier. This book fits in to the current 8th grade Georgia Studies curriculum as it is about a young person’s coming of age during the beginning of the Revolutionary War. In addition, the class recently completed research and did a report over the Atlanta Race Riots, a major plot point in the play which the school attended at the Alliance Theater, “Tell Me My Dream.”
As eight of the nine students in this CMP class are also in Model UN, some time is spent discussing current issues and how the story can be viewed differently in other countries. This is a great way to understand empathy, which is one of the goals of character education.

ELEMENTARY MATH OLYMPIAD TEAM IS GETTING READY FOR THE FUTURE COMPETITIONS!!!!
Practice, practice, practice. The only way to learn math is by doing.
This past week, elementary math team had a mock competition. So, Students worked hard individually and in their teams to solve released competition questions. After individual and team rounds, students presented solution of each question on the board.
They also have a homework this week to work on.
Give a try...
Question: What is the greatest possible number of points of intersection that can occur if four different straight lines and one circle are drawn on the same sheet of paper?
Answer: 14

MRS. WHITLOCK'S GRATEFUL FIRST GRADE
We have been learning all about gratitude this month in Character Education, and have discussed how when we are grateful, it makes us happier and more willing to help others.
In class, we have been working on a 12-Day Gratitude Journal. Students have started each day with a prompt asking about different things they are thankful for. We also made pennants displaying something we are thankful for that can be found in our hallway. It has been a good way for us to talk and think about the amazing things we have.
We are all very fortunate!

Fulton Science Academy Pre-K Games and Puzzle Club
Pre-K loves puzzles! Working cooperatively, the students put together floor puzzles to help master skills and concepts such as; shape recognition, visual perception and eye-hand coordination. Puzzles teach our little ones important social skills such as communicating verbally, sharing, taking turns, and social interaction.
